For this piece, I've created a piano and a viola part in standard tuning and combined them with another piano and viola part in a customised microtonal tuning. The two different tunings compete with each other, repeating melodic ideas back and forth in a canon-like way, or they play together to create hypnotic and chaotic ostinatos with rich, augmented harmonies. I like to think this is a metaphor for two dialogues inside my head. One is the rational thinker and the other is my emotional instinct. We as humans are trained to analyse, justify and rationalise to the best of our abilities, yet even when there is intellectual clarity, our passions can overwhelm us and even surprise us.
